Membership Requirements



You will be assigned to one of 6 teams (crew) at one of the 3 Fire Stations. You are expected to attend duty. Your crew has duty every 6 days. If your crew duty is a weeknight, you are expected to be at your Fire Station with your crew from 6:00PM to 6:00AM the next morning. If your crew duty is a weekend day, then you are expected to be at your Fire Station with your crew from 9:00AM (Saturday or Sunday) until 9:00AM (Sunday) or 6:00AM (Monday).

There are a lot of jobs you can be assigned to if properly trained. Here is a description of each:

Recruit – You are a new member with no previous training or experience. You will need to complete the following classes in order to be enrolled in a Firefighter or Emergency Medical Technician course: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (8 hours), Infection Control (4 hours), Critical Incident Stress Management (4 hours), Hazardous Materials Awareness (8 hours). You are expected to enroll in the next Firefighter 1 class.

Firefighter – You are certified as a Virginia Department of Fire Programs (VDFP) Firefighter 1 or equivalent. You have completed the recruit classes.

Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMTB) – You are certified as a Virginia Office of EMS EMTB. You have completed the Prince William County Basic Life Support Protocols course. You have completed the Department basic life support internship process.

Ambulance Driver – You are certified as an EVOC 2 driver and have completed the recruit classes.

Engine Driver – You are certified as a Firefighter 1, EVOC 3, and the VDFP Driver – Pump Operator. You have completed the Department requirements to operate an Engine Company.

Truck/Tower Driver – You are certified as a Firefighter 2, EVOC 3, Driver – Aerial Operator, VDPF HTR Rope Rescue Awareness and Operations, VDFP HTR Vehicle Rescue Awareness and Operations.

Medic Driver – You are certified as an EMTB and EVOC 2.

Heavy Rescue Driver – You are certified as a Firefighter 2, EMTB, EVOC 3, VDFP HTR Rope Rescue Awareness and Operations, VDFP HTR Trench Rescue, VDFP HTR Vehicle Rescue Awareness and Operations, and Structural Collapse Rescue.

Paramedic – You are certified as a VA OEMS EMT – Intermediate Paramedic or Paramedic, AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and AHA Pediatric Advance Life Support. You have completed both the Prince William County Basic and Advanced Life Support Protocol courses.

Engine Officer – You are certified as a Firefighter 2, EVOC 3, Driver – Pump Operator, EMTB, and completed the Prince William County Incident Officer Course. Most Officers have complete VDFP Fire Instructor 1 and 2 and VDFP Fore Officer 1 and 2.

Heavy Rescue or Tower/Truck Officer – You have the same certificates as the driver and experience as an Engine Officer.

Battalion Chief – Are certified as a Heavy Rescue or Truck/Tower Officer with more than 10 years experience as a Firefighter.
